By Michelle DeSalvo

Freshman at Bryant have a variety of speakers and events that they must attend as part of their course curriculum each year, however the upperclassmen are left on their own for the most part. Unfortunately this can often mean that upperclassmen miss out on great opportunities to experience some of the talented people that are frequently speaking at Bryant, simply because they are only targeted towards the freshman class.

Tuesday April 27 at 3:30pm, the freshman Liberal Arts Seminar will be hosting Anne Whiston Spirn in Janikies to compliment the readings taught in the freshman course.  Although it may not directly correspond with upperclassmen course work I can assure you through reading up on Whiston Spirn it will be interesting for all audiences. The event will focus on Spirn’s book Daring to Look”, which is written about one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, Dorothea Lange.

Anne Whiston Spirn is a professor of landscape architecture at MIT and focuses on promoting life sustaining communities.  She has written three books on the topic, and has received many awards for her writing and research.  She classifies herself as an author, photographer, landscape architect and a teacher, with so many accomplishments under her belt one aspect of her life is sure to be of interest to everyone.

This two hour event will mainly focus on the book “Daring to Look”, which is about the photography and research of Dorothea Lang, a photographer of migrant and displaced Americans.

Don’t miss this great cultural opportunity!

On April 14, the Communication Society hosted a presentation by Bryant professor Kathleen Brown in  Nick’s Place in the Bryant Center. Brown, a Communication professor, spoke about how she became the Assistant Director of Alumni Relations. Brown, who graduated Emmanuel College, received a degree in Communications and Politics and Law, also minored in Performing Arts.

Brown also discussed her work history. She worked at Hasbro, where she was in charge of putting together toy sets at various trade shows and has always had a passion for non-profit organizations. This led her to New York, where she got a job event planning.

While Brown was working to get her Master’s degree in Communication, she worked as a professor at Bryant and the University of Rhode Island. She said that working at Bryant allowed her to display all her skills and abilities in communication.

Part of her discussion was inviting the audience to discuss their career aspirations and tailoring her stories and advice to those aspirations. She is definitely well rounded in the Communication field, allowing for her to have words of wisdom to share with almost everyone there. She also invited members of the audience to an upcoming alumni networking event, a great opportunity for anyone hoping to obtain a job or internship in the near future.

Author of Hidden Letters

Author of the Book “Hidden Letters” comes to

Bryant Interfaith Center

By: Brittany Eagar

Deborah Slier and Ian Shine, authors of the book Hidden Letters will be speaking in the Interfaith Center at Bryant University tomorrow.

Philip “Flip” Slier wrote the letters that later became the book while in various concentration and work camps in German-occupied Holland. The letters are a unique first hand glimpse into what life was like in in Holland while it was being occupied by Germans, a side of the war not often shown.

There is an abundance of books about this horrific time, but “Hidden Letters” gives you an honest and raw glimpse into what it was like through this compilation of handwritten letters.

Jack Polack, Chairman Emeritus, The Anne Frank Society openly praised “Hidden Letters” saying it is “The best holocaust book I’ve ever read, and I’ve read them all.” With fantastic reviews from experts and a presentation that is sure to include not only candid stories, but also candid photographs from Flip’s life  Deborah Slier and Ian Shine’s visit is sure to be an experience.

The story of “Hidden Letters” is an interesting one: the letters were found in 1997 when demolition was being done in the walls of a family home in Amsterdam and  are presented the way they were written from “Flip” himself.
There is a total of  86 letters in the book making you feel as though you are reading personal letters from your own family member. The book may be presented as just letters, but before publishing the book Deborah Slier and Ian Shine spent eight years researching the details within the letters.

Don’t miss out on your opportunity to hear the authors speak of Flip’s amazing story. Along with the book being available for purchase the authors will also be sticking around after they present, an opportunity to ask questions and converse with the writers of this remarkable book.  The event is open to everyone and after reading reviews of the book I strongly encourage you attend!

Not convinced yet? Here is a video of the authors’ appearance on NECN last June:

Who:  Deborah Slier and Ian Shine, authors of the book Hidden Letters
When:  Friday April 9th at 3:30 pm
Where: Bryant University, the main chapel in the Interfaith Center
What:  Discussion about the book Hidden Letters straight from the authors themselves
